The Tourism Industry:

Cradle Chalet Boutique Luxury Lodge Tasmania

After moving to Tasmania from Adelaide we decided to attended a commercial cookery course over 12 weeks. "No rest for the wicked" and no time to spare, we soon went on to purchased a road side cafe business in need of major renovation near Cradle Mountain Tasmania.

This roadside cafe later was transformed, building additions included: 8 new luxury chalets, extensive landscaping and a complete building makeover creating a boutique wilderness lodge.

Five years later we had completed a RACT 4 1/2 star wilderness lodge with restaurant in the Cradle Mountain town of Moina naming it Cradle Chalet Boutique Luxury Lodge. As the owner builder we operated it for a total of nine years.

Marketing:

Having hands on practical building experience was a key advantage for our next pursuit, a web design and marketing course. "Build a wilderness lodge and they will come" was never a thought, we needed to build a website and understand the internet, if the lodge was to survive.

An interactive website soon followed, and later to increase visitors to the website we commissioned the first 3D walking map of Cradle Mountain. This initiative proved to be the launching pad for the business, increasing visitors to the website and lifting accommodation bookings.

Macmillan Publishing:

Marketing the lodge reached another high when we received a request from Macmillan Publishing to use our 3D Map of Cradle Mountain in their Global Atlas Second Edition which was distributed to every school in Australia.

House & Garden Magazine:

The Australian House and Garden Magazine approached us to include a full page free editorial in a tourism feature, the result increased bookings and national coverage.

Owner Builder Magazine:

Being an owner builder our project again received national coverage with five pages of editorial highlighting the unique hand carved timber work, use of forest poles and internal fit out with Huon Pine, Blackwood and Myrtle. The article stated - "A decidedly Swiss Alps design influence was evident."

How We Sold Our Tourism Business:

After nine years it was time to move on, we collated the following business details to sell our lodge. A property report, a detailed property description, an inventory list of goods and chattels, a three year comparative operating statement in consultation with our accountant and the 5 images mentioned above. This information was prepared in readiness to genuine prospective purchasers via a Pfd. Doc.

Within two weeks we had achieved a property sale, 2 contracts both exceeding our asking price. We now offer our marketing experience and services to any person wishing to sell a business.
